How to Choose the Best Rug Size and Placement for Your Living Spaces

Choosing just the right rug can make a space feel pulled together; so much so that rugs are often a starting point for designers. The perfect rug can either be a showstopper or the piece that grounds and pulls a space together, or it can be both.

So what makes a rug just right? Well there is of course there is no right answer to that question. But there are some things that should be considered prior to choosing a rug for your living spaces. They are care, durability, and size, and design. Of course your budget will be the ultimate deciding factor in a rug purchase. It goes without saying that investing in a quality piece is best but the following should still be considered with any budget.

area Rug Care

Before going all in buying that beautiful rug you love make sure you understand the care instructions. Some rugs require professional cleaning, some vintage rugs require the use of a mesh screen for protection when vacuuming. Many rugs can not withstand harsh cleaning agents. Make sure you are up for the care requirements and that such care will fit your lifestyle in your home. Long term the materials that are more work to care for are typically higher quality and if cared for properly will last indefinitely.

carpet Durability

I don’t think anyone wants to buy a rug that is not durable. To ensure that a rug is appropriate for the space you wish to use it in, it is important to consider how it will wear in your specific location. If a rug requires special cleaning it may not hold up well in a kitchen or bath. If a rug has a thick high pile it may not wear well in a high traffic area. Overall natural fiber rugs such as wool, if cared for properly will outlast other materials.

choosing a rug Design/Style

Now this is such a personal choice. Do you want the rug to be a feature? Do you want it to add texture? Do you want it to ground the space and blend in? These questions will influence if you choose a colorful rug, a neutral rug or something in between. As far as style it is again very personal, I am in the camp that you can embrace various styles in a space so obsessing over the right style is not necessary. If you love the rug, use it!

choosing a rug Size

Choosing the correct size rug for your space will aid in achieving a pulled together look. There are general rules for rug size depending on the space. Follow our rug sizing guide for general guidelines for choosing the right rug size. But don’t fret, if you have a vintage beauty that isn’t the “right” size go ahead and use it, there is always a way to make it work, perhaps you try layering.
