4 Ways To Carve Out New Space In Your Home, Inspired By Tiny Living

van life

A simpler, less cluttered life. One that is off the grid, moving from place to place. To some it is the quintessential life and to others it may seem…a little tight. Regardless of which camp you fall into there are so many beautiful lessons to be learned from living in a smaller footprint.  And here at Prosper and Dwell, we are always looking for inspiration to elevate our own spaces! Despite the fact that many of us do not have the space constraints that tiny home dwellers have, we can still take some of the lessons learned from tiny living to carve out more space in our own homes. Here we go:

Home has taken on a completely new meaning this year. It’s a place that protects you. It’s a place of work, play and respite. It is the beginning, middle and end of our day. Maximizing every inch of our house has been not only important but essential through this season of life. With the footprint of your home being limited, the only place to go is up! Look for opportunities above your desk, cabinets or even bed for extra space that is underutilized. This solution works great for those just needing a little extra room.

Multifunctional Furniture

Having furniture pieces in the house that can be moved to the side or used in a different way not only cuts down on the amount of items on hand but allows you to maximize your floor area. A murphy bed can be pulled down when needed but lifted up and stored when not. The room doesn’t have to be large, as long as furniture is multi-functional. This solution works great for dual purpose rooms.

Accessory Dwelling Spaces

If you have the space in your backyard, many have added sheds and converted them into accessory dwelling spaces, which could serve as an additional office or sleeping area. Depending on the complexity of the addition, you may need to check the residential zoning code to make sure these structures are allowed in your area. This solution works great for those who need more privacy while working from home.

Maximize Your Backyard

Of course we all don't have the mobility a tiny home may have - but we do often have outdoor space accessible to us. Maximizing the functionality of your backyard can be key to not only get your vitamin d but also take a break from your house. A well thought out backyard area can be magical - adding lights, a firepit and some seating can make all the difference in making that space feel like a retreat from your main home.

Our homes will adapt as our life situations change over time. Our houses are functioning completely differently than they were a year ago, and I would expect the same to happen over the next year. Finding ways to keep our spaces fresh and relevant not only is a fun design challenge but helps us run our lives more effectively. Hopefully these tips will help you redefine some of your spaces and make it more functional for your lifestyle during this phase of life!
